The First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine (FAHZU)

The First Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University School of Medicine (FAHZU) was founded in 1947. Over the past 79 years, it has grown into an internationally renowned medical center integrating clinical care, medical education, and scientific research. Today, FAHZU ranks among the top 1% of hospitals in China and employs more than 13,000 faculty and staff members, with 5,000 licensed beds.

As one of China’s leading tertiary hospitals, FAHZU consists of multiple centers with excellence, such as organ transplantation, pancreatic diseases, infectious diseases, hematology, nephrology, urology, and clinical pharmacy. The organ transplantation center, for instance, covers the replacement of pancreas, liver, kidney, heart, lung, and small bowel transplantation. Since the establishment of its kidney and liver transplant programs in 1977 and 1993, respectively, the center has completed more than 9,700 kidney transplants and over 5,100 liver transplants. It also leads the world in the cumulative number of living-related small bowel transplantations (LR-SBTx).

FAHZU emphasizes medical education and research. The hospital provides comprehensive medical education and professional training, including undergraduate and postgraduate education, standardized residency training, fellowship training, and continuing medical education. Many doctors trained in FAHZU have become leaders across China. FAHZU physicians and scientists have conducted outstanding medical research and competed successfully for funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Science and Technology Major Projects, and National Key R&D Programs, with annual research funding exceeding RMB 300 million for the last six consecutive years. Besides, over 800 papers have been published in prestigious journals, including Nature, Cell, Science, NEJM, and The Lancet.

FAHZU has established partnerships with over 60 leading universities and medical institutions worldwide. Multiple exchange programs are also in place. It is home to the China-Arab States Science and Technology Cooperation Center for Public Health established under the Ministry of Science and Technology of China and the Joint International Research Lab of Pancreatic Diseases entitled by the Ministry of Education of China.

As a national pioneer in digital healthcare, FAHZU is advancing the digital transformation of hospital management and clinical care through big data and artificial intelligence. The hospital has developed several internationally pioneering AI innovations, including the world’s first non-contrast CT-based AI model for early pancreatic cancer detection, a large language model and clinical decision support system for critical care medicine, an AI-assisted precision neuromodulation platform for bipolar disorder, a real-time interactive AI pathology diagnostic model, and an AI-powered non-contrast CT model for emergency diagnosis of acute aortic diseases.

Nature Nanotechnology

Nature Nanotechnology is an interdisciplinary journal that publishes papers of the highest quality and significance in all areas of nanoscience and nanotechnology. The journal covers research into the design, characterization and production of structures, devices and systems that involve the manipulation and control of materials and phenomena at atomic, molecular and macromolecular scales. Both bottom-up and top-down approaches — and combinations of the two — are covered.
Nature Nanotechnology also encourages the exchange of ideas between chemists, physicists, material scientists, biomedical researchers, engineers and other researchers who are active at the frontiers of this diverse and multidisciplinary field. Nature Materials is a monthly multi-disciplinary journal aimed at bringing together cutting-edge research across the entire spectrum of materials science and engineering. Materials research is a diverse and fast-growing discipline, which has moved from a largely applied, engineering focus to a position where it has an increasing impact on other classical disciplines such as physics, chemistry and biology. Nature Materials covers all applied and fundamental aspects of the synthesis/processing, structure/composition, properties and performance of materials, where "materials" are identified as substances in the condensed states (liquid, solid, colloidal) designed or manipulated for technological ends.
