Overview:
Plastic pollution is a pressing environmental and public health problem, related to the large quantities of single-use plastics, its persistence in the environment, and low rates of plastic recycling and regeneration. Plastic particles in the environment are projected to increase significantly in upcoming years, and products of their degradation — micro(nano)plastics (MNPs) — are transported through atmospheric, aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.
During this Nature forum, plastic waste management, the fate, transport and effects of MNPs in the environment, and public policy will be discussed.
A panel discussion with the speakers will follow, to identify key research needs in plastic research and to provide potential solutions to plastic pollution in the context of the relevant United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
